knew that this photoshoot would be special. Shonna has a gentle and humble
spirit, a very rare and refreshing attribute. Honestly, she took direction so
well and even had a few poses of her own to try out. The photo shoot flowed
back and forth between her and my creative ideas. Encourage the mommy-to-be to embrace her feelings in the moment and to express her deepest desires for the shoot. This will guide your creative eye and yield wonderful results.

Mommy’s Safety & Comfort

In the Bahamas, we are blessed to have beaches only minutes
away. When taking photos on the beach, be sure to keep your client away from
harsh temperatures. Apply sunscreen and wear other necessary items to protect
yourself and the client. Our session started around golden hour, sparing
us from the sun’s harshest rays. Maternity sessions are different as I always do my best to
ensure the safety and comfort of the expectant mother above all else. I kept
water on hand, checked in with her often to ensure she was doing well physically
and gave her opportunities to rest where needed.

Creativity

The water was cool, and thankfully the weather was amazing. I was able to use several spots on the beach to place Shonna in the most flattering light. Ensure that the poses are not only safe and comfortable for mommy to be, but also accentuate her growing and beautiful baby bump. On the beach, I was able to play with the movement of the water, trees, sand, a boardwalk and also passing vessels. Being aware of the surroundings and staying present can add a unique touch to locations that might seem overdone. Also, incorporating props that are suited to the location or the celebration like sunglasses, hats, plushes or sonograms will make the images unique and memorable. It was a successful shoot and I cannot wait to get in the studio with Shonna when her baby boy arrives.
